Born in Sofia, mezzo-soprano Kamelia Kader studied at the New Bulgarian University, leading University in Bulgaria, where she earned a BA in Musical Art. Kamelia completed her musical studies in Italy, at the Accademia d’ Arte Lirica di Osimo, under the supervision of Sergio Segalini, William Matteuzzi and Raina Kabaivanska, and participated to master classes held by eminent international artists like Monserrat Caballe, Magda Oliviero, Gustav Kuhn and Renato Bruson in Accademia Chigiana, Siena.
After her opera debut at the age of 19 as Marcellina, in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro at Sofia National Theatre, she won international singing competitions in chamber music and contemporary classical music (Trofeo La Fenice, Citta di Alcamo, and Franco Alfano in Italy and Grigor Parlichev in Bulgaria).
Her remarkable vocal agility and her dramatic qualities make her confortable in performing a variety of roles, from barocco cantatas to Mozart and Rossini, to contemporary operas and lieds. She has over thirty roles in her repertoire including parts in rare pieces such as Romeo in Vaccai’s Giulietta e Romeo, Rodrigo in Donizetti’s Pia de’ Tolomei, Ramira in Galuppi’s L’uomo femmina.
Among her performances are worth to mention Begbick in Kurt Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny in Livorno, Pisa, Lucca and Ravenna, under the direction of Jonathan Webb, Suor Zelatrice in Puccini’s Suor Angelica in Siena, conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti, Madame Rosa in Donizetti’s Il Campanello in Firenze, conductor Fabrizio Maria Carminati, direction Jean-Louis Grinda, Mamma Lucia in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana in Livorno and Modena, conductor Jonathan Webb, direction Alessio Pizzech, Third Dame in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa, Rosina in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Toscana Opera Festival, with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Flora in Verdi’s La Traviata in Genoa directed by Jean-Louis Grinda, conductor Fabio Luisi, Dorabella in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and the title role of Rossini’s Cenerentola in Firenze.
In 2014, she sang for the acclaimed production Un Moto di gioia by Anne Teresa de Keermaeker (previously at the Avignon Festival, La Monnaie in Brussels and the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris) at the Teatro Camoes in Lisbon, Portugal, with orchestra Divino Sospiro and Portuguese National Ballet.
Kamelia Kader has recorded several CDs including Haendel’s Alcina as Ruggero with Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra in Sofia, as well as rare chamber music pieces of XXth century Italian composers such as Respighi, Casella, Alfano, Malipiero, Pizzetti, Castelnuovo Tedesco (CD Urania).
Engagements of the season 2015/16 engagements include Lehar’s The Merry Widow (Praskowia) at the Carlo Felice in Genoa, Amelia’s maid in Simon Boccanegra by Verdi always in Genoa. She will sing La Frugola in Il Tabarro by Puccini at the Opéra de Montpellier under the baton of Rani Calderon in June 2016 and In November 2016 she sings the main role of Pryamvada in Sakuntala by Alfano at Teatro Bellini of Catane. Kamelia performs then Mrs Sedley in Peter Grimes by Britten at Teatro Comunale of Bologne in June 2017 under the baton of Juraj Valcuha. The season 2017/18 begins with the role of Mamma Lucia in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Festival of Ravenna and the role of Rodrigo in Pia de Tolomei at Teatro Verdi of Pisa and Livourne among other new and upcoming engagements.
